Know Your Thyroid Facts – Drugs.com MedNews

Sunday, January 9, 2022 — Thyroid cancer diagnoses in American women have skyrocketed in the past decade.

That is why it is necessary to pay attention to this small gland located at the base of your neck. The thyroid gland is an important part of the endocrine system, and it produces a hormone that helps control metabolism.

“Although there is no known way to prevent thyroid cancer, some of the things that may help keep your thyroid healthy are the lifestyle choices you make,” said endocrinologists Dr. Amanda Laird and Dr. Tony Benignato of Rutgers Cancer Institute, New Jersey. New Bronze.

Thyroid disorders can range from a small, harmless goiter (an enlarged gland) to cancer that may need radioactive iodine treatment or surgery.

Laird and Bennato offered these tips for thyroid health:

  • Start by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eat nutritious foods, including a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and foods made with whole grains.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Make sure to be physically active regularly to improve your overall health.
  • Learn about the signs of thyroid cancer, the most common of which is a painless lump or lump in the neck. “Other symptoms tend to occur only after the condition has reached an advanced stage, which may include unexplained hoarseness or difficulty swallowing that does not go away,” Laird and Bennato said in a Rutgers news release. “You may also experience a feeling of pressure at the point of mass.”
  • If you notice something abnormal, tell your doctor. “The best way to determine if you have a thyroid condition is to see your doctor as soon as possible,” the doctors said.

Lumps in the neck should first be evaluated through a physical examination. Then your doctor can decide if more tests are needed.

Ultrasound may be done to evaluate thyroid masses, followed by a biopsy, depending on the results.

Laird and Bennato recommended seeing a caregiver who is familiar with the latest advances in genetic counseling and testing if your family has a history of thyroid cancer.
